Summary: Uber is encouraging its drivers to switch to electric vehicles (EVs) by offering a $4,000 grant, coinciding with the rebranding of Uber Green to Uber Electric. This initiative aims to make zero-emission rides more accessible and address drivers’ concerns about EV battery range. Additionally, riders can enjoy discounts on electric rides, making the switch beneficial for both drivers and passengers.

Uber Electric: A New Name and a Big Incentive

Uber is rebranding its Uber Green service to Uber Electric to clearly highlight its commitment to zero-emission rides. To support this transition, Uber is offering drivers a $4,000 grant to switch from their current vehicles to electric ones. Currently, there are over 200,000 EVs on Uber’s global network, with drivers in the US, Canada, and Europe adopting electric vehicles up to five times faster than the general population.

How the $4,000 Grant Works

This grant is especially timely, as the federal tax credit for used EVs recently expired under President Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill.” The new Uber grant matches the previous maximum tax credit value, providing significant financial support. Drivers in New York City, California, Colorado, and Massachusetts automatically qualify for the $4,000 grant when they switch to an EV. Both new and used electric vehicles are eligible. Additionally, Uber drivers nationwide can receive a $1,000 discount when purchasing any new or used EV through TrueCar.

Battery-Aware Matching Expands to More EVs

To address concerns about EV battery range—which 49% of non-EV Uber drivers cite as a barrier to switching—Uber is expanding its battery-aware matching (BAM) feature. BAM allows drivers to connect their EV to the Uber Driver app, ensuring they only receive ride requests that can be completed with their remaining battery range. This feature is now available for EVs from Kia, Hyundai, Ford, Nissan, Volkswagen, and Mercedes-Benz across 25 countries, including the US and Canada.

Riders Get a Discount on Electric Rides

Uber is also encouraging riders to choose electric rides by offering a 20% discount (up to $8) on their next Uber Electric trip. To redeem this offer, riders can use the code GOELECTRIC20, which is valid for one week.
