Snapchat has made its innovative Imagine Lens, an AI-powered image-generation tool, freely available to all users in the US. Previously exclusive to paid subscribers, this Lens lets users transform their Snaps with creative prompts, opening up new ways to express themselves and share fun, AI-generated images.
Snapchat’s Imagine Lens Goes Free for All Users
Initially launched in September for paid subscribers only, Snapchat’s Imagine Lens is now accessible to everyone in the United States at no cost. This move allows users to experiment with AI-generated images by editing their Snaps or creating entirely new visuals using custom prompts.
How the Imagine Lens Works
Using the Imagine Lens is simple and fun. After taking a selfie or any Snap, you can type prompts like “Turn me into an alien” or “Show me a grumpy cat.” The Lens then generates an image based on your request. Snapchat suggests using it for trying on Halloween costume ideas or reimagining friends with new looks. These creations can be shared with friends, posted to your Snapchat Story, or shared outside the app.
Competing in the AI Social Media Space
Snapchat’s expansion of its AI Lens comes amid growing competition from other social platforms introducing AI video-generation tools. For example, Meta’s Meta AI and OpenAI’s Sora offer advanced features that allow users to create AI-driven videos and personas. Sora, in particular, enables users to generate videos of themselves after submitting a one-time video and audio recording, allowing friends to share these AI “cameos” and star together in videos.
This competitive landscape encourages Snapchat to innovate and offer free access to its AI tools, ensuring it remains appealing to younger audiences seeking creative digital experiences.
Availability and Future Plans
Previously, the Imagine Lens was exclusive to Lens+ and Snapchat Platinum subscribers. Now, free users in the US can enjoy a limited number of image generations. Snapchat plans to expand availability to other markets soon, starting with Canada, Great Britain, and Australia.
Using the Imagine Lens
You can find the Imagine Lens near the front of the in-app Lens Carousel or search for it by name. To create your AI image, tap the caption to edit your prompt or choose from preloaded suggestions if you need inspiration. Snapchat reports that users access Lenses more than 8 billion times daily, highlighting their popularity and engagement.
