Summary: Microsoft has officially launched Copilot Mode in its Edge browser, integrating AI more deeply to enhance your browsing experience. This new mode opens a chat window with each new tab, allowing you to ask questions, search, or enter URLs. It also offers new features like Copilot Actions, which can perform tasks such as booking reservations or unsubscribing from emails, and Journeys, which organizes your browsing history to help you revisit topics easily. While promising, some AI features are still imperfect and may occasionally make mistakes.

Introducing Copilot Mode in Microsoft Edge

Microsoft is embracing the AI browser trend with the official launch of Copilot Mode in Edge. First announced in July, this mode transforms Copilot into your gateway to the web. Every new tab you open features a chat window where you can ask questions, conduct searches, or enter URLs directly.

What Can Copilot Do?

Copilot Mode integrates AI-generated responses, search results, and navigation into a single window. It can access information from all your open tabs—not just the current one—allowing you to ask Copilot to summarize content across multiple pages or compare products side by side.

New Features: Copilot Actions and Journeys

Alongside the general availability of Copilot Mode, Microsoft is previewing new features:

  • Copilot Actions: This agentic feature can perform tasks on your behalf, such as unsubscribing from marketing emails or booking reservations.
  • Journeys: An AI-powered tool that organizes your browsing history into topics and suggests what to explore next, helping you quickly return to frequently visited subjects.

Limitations and Reliability Issues

Like many AI-powered tools, Copilot’s agentic features are not yet fully reliable. Microsoft warns users that the tool is “intended for research and evaluation purposes” and “can make mistakes.” For example, attempts to delete or send emails sometimes failed despite Copilot indicating success. It did, however, successfully unsubscribe from a mailing list.

When trying to book a reservation at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City, Copilot mistakenly selected the wrong date, highlighting that some tasks may require user verification.

How to Enable Copilot Mode

To try Copilot Mode, download the latest version of Microsoft Edge and toggle the Copilot switch on Microsoft’s website. If you’re in the US, you can also enable the preview features for Copilot Actions and Journeys.

With these new AI capabilities, Microsoft Edge aims to make browsing more interactive and efficient, though users should remain aware of the current limitations.
