Summary: Just in time for the holiday season, Google is introducing exciting AI-powered shopping features designed to make online shopping easier and more enjoyable. From conversational search that understands natural language queries to an AI that can call stores on your behalf, these innovations aim to reduce the tedious parts of shopping while keeping the fun and discovery alive.

Conversational Shopping with AI Mode

Google has launched a new way to shop using its AI Mode, a conversational search feature that lets you ask shopping questions naturally, much like chatting with a friend. Whether you’re searching for cozy autumn sweaters or comparing skincare products, the AI provides tailored responses complete with images, prices, reviews, and inventory updates. Powered by Google’s extensive Shopping Graph — which includes over 50 billion product listings updated frequently — you can trust the information to be current and relevant.

Gemini App’s Enhanced Shopping Features

In addition to AI Mode, Google’s Gemini app now offers more detailed and creative shopping suggestions, going beyond simple text to provide fleshed-out ideas. Currently available to users in the U.S., this feature helps shoppers explore options and discover products in a more engaging way.

Agentic Checkout Simplifies Purchases

Google is also rolling out agentic checkout within Google Search in the U.S., including in AI Mode. Compatible with merchants like Wayfair, Chewy, Quince, and select Shopify stores, this feature allows you to track prices and get notified when items fall within your budget. With your permission, Google can then complete the purchase for you using Google Pay, confirming all details before finalizing the order. This not only saves you time but also helps retailers retain customers who might otherwise move on.

AI Calls Stores to Check Product Availability

One of the most innovative features is an AI that can call local stores on your behalf to inquire about product availability, pricing, and promotions. Built on Google’s Duplex technology and integrated with the Shopping Graph and payment systems, this AI walks you through your product needs, contacts stores, and summarizes the findings for you. Currently available in the U.S. for categories like toys, health and beauty products, and electronics, you can activate this by searching for products “near me” and selecting the “Let Google Call” option.

Looking Ahead: Responsible AI Use and Retailer Options

Google is mindful of the impact these AI calls have on merchants. The system ensures calls are infrequent, transparent about being AI-driven, and only proceed with the recipient’s consent. Retailers can also opt out of receiving such calls if they prefer. Although a live demo was planned, technical issues prevented its completion during the press briefing.
